Therapy for Pre-Teens + Teens in San Diego
Middle school and high school bring a significant shift in what is expected of young people. School becomes more demanding, friendships become more complex, and teens are expected to manage greater independence while still figuring out who they are.
For some, this is when challenges with anxiety, ADHD, perfectionism, social pressure, or emotional regulation become harder to manage. A teen who was previously doing well may begin procrastinating, withdrawing, falling behind, avoiding things they once enjoyed, or becoming increasingly afraid of making mistakes.
These changes don't necessarily mean your teen has lost motivation or stopped caring. The demands of adolescence may be outpacing the strategies they have for managing them.
Adolescence Is a Time of Identity Formation
Pre-teens and teens are developing a stronger sense of who they are while becoming increasingly independent from their families. They're figuring out their values, relationships, interests, abilities, and where they fit.
That process isn't always comfortable.
Academic pressure, changing friendships, social media, family expectations, and fear of judgment can make it difficult to separate what a teen actually wants from what they believe is expected of them. Some respond by pushing themselves harder, while others begin avoiding situations where they might fail, disappoint someone, or feel uncomfortable.
Therapy gives teens a place to better understand themselves while developing the skills to manage the challenges that come with increasing independence.
How We Help
At Patch Counseling, we work with pre-teens and teens experiencing concerns including anxiety, depression, ADHD and executive functioning challenges, academic stress, social anxiety, perfectionism, self-harm, trauma, and difficulties with friendships or family relationships.
Our therapists integrate CBT, DBT, mindfulness, Clinical Art Therapy, and EMDR based on each client's needs and treatment goals. Therapy may focus on emotional regulation, managing stress, challenging avoidance and self-criticism, improving communication, developing executive functioning strategies, or processing difficult experiences.
We also help young people recognize their strengths, develop confidence in their own decision-making, and build skills they can carry into increasing independence.
Supporting Parents While Respecting Teen Independence
Parents remain an important source of support during adolescence, even as teens naturally begin wanting more privacy and independence.
When appropriate, we incorporate parent sessions to improve communication, establish realistic expectations, reinforce strategies at home, and help parents understand what their teen may be experiencing.
We balance parent involvement with the privacy teens need to develop trust with their therapist and take increasing ownership of their treatment.
Supporting Students in Our Community
Our team is familiar with schools throughout Rancho Bernardo, Poway, and the surrounding San Diego communities, as well as the academic expectations and support systems available to students.
When mental health challenges begin to affect attendance, academic performance, motivation, or functioning at school, we can help families better understand their child's needs and navigate available school-based supports, including 504 Plans and IEPs when appropriate.
